Ljubljana’s mesmerising Christmas lights
Magical is how I would describe the festive lights that Ljubljana put on annually. Having only ever admired them from the other side of the world (on social media), it was amazing to finally experience it in person.
The vibrant and joyous atmosphere is one that shouldn’t be missed. With the main light attraction being in the middle of the center, right by the Triple Bridge. The illuminating Christmas Tree and lights that hang above confirms the beginning of the festive season and you can feel the excitement in the air. The laughter between friends, families, and the amazement shown by children and their childlike wander.
This year the lights were turned on, on the 1st of December and the streets were filled with people. There is so much to enjoy including the light display spread out over the city. Bars by Ljubljanica River are filled with people enjoying the night. You will also find little stalls offering food and drinks as you walk along. I would recommend stopping for Kuhano Vino (Cooked Wine). Best described as warm sweet wine, that will help get through the Wintery night.
In Kongresni Trg, you will notice the decent sized ice skating rink ‘Ice Fantasy’ running until the 7th of January. Available for use throughout the day and night, it’s a bit of fun for everyone, covering 2,000 square meters. They even have events running throughout the festive season including a much anticipated 90’s night! Also placed where tickets are purchased on the second level of the Marquee is a bar, and comfortable seating for you to sit and enjoy the night, or watch the skaters below.
In Pogačerjev Trg (where Odprta Kuhna usually is on Friday’s) is a small stage with live music. There you can listen (and dance) to pop and traditional Slovenian Music. With stalls within the area where you can buy warm clothing and bags or enjoy a drink or two when you need a bit of recovery from the dancing.
As a first-timer to the wonderful event, I can honestly tell you this is one not to be missed, so rug up, make sure you’re warm, visit the lights, and get into the festive season. I can assure you it’s so very worth it!
Have you expericnced the festive lights? Were you blown away by how amazing they were?
